1. Định nghĩa
Mệnh đề quan hệ (Relative Clause) là mệnh đề phụ được nối với mệnh đề chính bằng các đại từ quan hệ như “who, whom, whose, which, that” hoặc các trạng từ quan hệ như “where, when, why”.
2. Đại từ quan hệ (Relative Pronouns)

Who: Đại từ quan hệ chỉ người, được sử dụng làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ.
Ví dụ: The man who is sitting by the fire is my father. (Người đàn ông đang ngồi bên cạnh lửa là cha tôi.) -
Whom: Đại từ quan hệ chỉ người, được sử dụng làm tân ngữ.
Ví dụ: The woman whom you saw yesterday is my aunt. (Người phụ nữ mà bạn gặp hôm qua là cô dì tôi.) -
Which: Đại từ quan hệ chỉ vật, được sử dụng làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ cho động từ sau nó.
Ví dụ: The book which is black is mine. (Quyển sách màu đen là của tôi.) -
That: Đại từ quan hệ chỉ cả người và vật, được sử dụng thay cho “who, whom, which” trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định.
Ví dụ: This is the dress that I bought yesterday. (Đây là chiếc váy mà tôi mua hôm qua.)
3. Trạng từ quan hệ (Relative Adverbs)

When: Trạng từ quan hệ chỉ thời gian, thay thế cho “at, on, in + which, then”.
Ví dụ: I’ll never forget the day when I met her. (Tôi sẽ không bao giờ quên ngày mà tôi gặp cô ấy.) -
Where: Trạng từ quan hệ chỉ nơi chốn, thay thế cho “at, on, in + which, there”.
Ví dụ: That is the house where we used to live. (Đó là ngôi nhà chúng tôi từng sống.) -
Why: Trạng từ quan hệ chỉ lý do, thay thế cho “for + which”.
Ví dụ: I don’t know the reason why I love him. (Tôi không biết lý do tại sao tôi yêu anh ấy.)
4. Các loại mệnh đề quan hệ

Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định (restrictive/defining relative clause):
Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định được sử dụng để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ đứng trước. Nếu bỏ đi mệnh đề quan hệ xác định, mệnh đề chính sẽ không có nghĩa rõ ràng.
Ví dụ: The girl who is wearing the blue dress is my sister. (Cô gái đang mặc chiếc váy xanh là em gái tôi.) -
Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định (non-restrictive/non-defining relative clause):
Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định được sử dụng để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ đứng trước, không cần thiết cho ý nghĩa của câu. Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định thường được phân cách với mệnh đề chính bằng dấu phẩy.
Ví dụ: My aunt, who is sitting next to you, is a doctor. (Cô dì của tôi, người đang ngồi bên cạnh bạn, là một bác sĩ.)
